August in Mexico City: Six Things Worth Planning Around

August in Mexico City moves at its own pace here. The rain shows up most afternoons, the light turns gold by six, and between school vacation and a packed cultural calendar, there is a lot on. We pulled together six things from this month worth building a day, or at least an afternoon, around.

One Night, Pay What You Can August 26, citywide.

Paga lo que puedas started a few years back as a single day at Masala y Maíz, the Roma Norte restaurant that dropped its fixed prices for one service and let guests decide what to pay. This year it has grown into a global day under the same name, with restaurants across the city joining in, Masala y Maíz, Baldio, Ahumalia, Bao Bao, Loup Bar, and Rudo among them. The food does not change, only the price does, so book ahead.

Rosalía Takes Over the Palacio de los Deportes

The Lux tour lands in the city for five nights this month, with shows starting at 8pm. Tickets have been moving fast across every date, so this is not one to leave until the week of.

Find the Crocodile on Reforma Paseo de la Reforma, in front of Reforma 222, ongoing.

Long before it was a photo stop, it was a gift. Leonora Carrington donated this bronze sculpture, a crocodile carrying a line of smaller crocodiles on its back, to the city in 2000. It sat mostly unnoticed in Chapultepec for years until she chose this spot on Reforma herself in 2006. Worth the walk even if you have passed it a dozen times.

Walk on the Moon for Forty Five Minutes Samara Satélite, Thursday through Sunday.

Luna, an immersive experience built around the Apollo 11 mission, puts a headset on you and keeps you moving through the whole thing rather than sitting still. You start with training on Earth and end up walking the lunar surface. The forty five minutes goes fast.

A Weekend of Thai Food at Cenart August 29 and 30, 11am to 6pm, Plaza de las Artes, Cenart, Coyoacán.

The Royal Thai Embassy and Cenart bring back the Thai Festival with street food, Muay Thai demonstrations, live music, and a T-Pop cover dance competition. Entry is free, so go hungry.

A Partial Lunar Eclipse, No Ticket Required August 27, starting 7:25pm, peak at 10:14pm, visible citywide.

According to INAOE, the partial eclipse begins at 7:25pm on the 27th and wraps up just after 1am, visible to the naked eye anywhere with a clear sky. No telescope, no reservation, just worth stepping outside for.
